Cafe Ray and Gåsebäck Film Festival bring you XRAY, a new photojournalism competition dedicated to the art of protest and resistance.

We recognize the need to champion photographs that elevate instances of protest and resistance, from the political to the political, social or cultural. The time to put as much light as possible on the ways we resist is now.

We champion new photographs by emerging and established photojournalists from Sweden and around the world. Submissions are open until Monday December 7th, 17.00 CET.

We encourage entrants to read our rules and regulations here, including our code of ethics, before submitting.

All entries will be assessed by our team, with the top 12-16 entries presented in January 2027 at an exhibition at Cafe Ray. A jury of artists, filmmakers and photographers will decide the winning photographs recognizing works for their excellence in craft, precision, courage and creativity. The winners will be announced at the exhibition in 2027.

We are an independent competition. We do not receive grants or subsidies. We are supported by volunteers, associates and friends who cherish photojournalism and want to see the practice of journalism flourish. A submission fee of €20.27 will be charged for every submission to contribute towards administrative and exhibition costs.
